the great went.

Do you guys remember that Nelly song "Hot in Herrre"? The one that goes "I am gettin' too hot, I'm gonna take my clothes off"? This would be the only way to describe what's going on here weather-wise in Paris. It is blazing and nothing I own seems to be cool enough that I too feel like takin' all my clothes off.

I have to say, I really do love the heat though. I didn't grow up with an air conditioner and braved scorching New York City summers with an oscillating fan and a spray bottle, so to me, this is what summer is all about. I figure it'll be cold soon enough so we might as well enjoy these fleeting days of endless picnics, rosé, effortless dresses, and friends.

If I had to have one complaint, one teeny tiny one, (almost quite literally) it would be that the bugs from outside are seeking refuge in our "cool" apartment. Compared to the sweltering heat outside, our flat must be an improvement for them, but it's still pretty toasty in here and am not open to sharing my space with creepy crawlies. I have an almost irrational phobia to bugs (I couldn't even finish the film adaption of William S. Burroughs' "Naked Lunch",  just to give you an idea), and because of them, I now have to keep the windows shut. Shut windows in almost 95 degree heat is a joke, so I myself have been seeking refuge elsewhere at either the nearby library or park.

If we weren't hot enough here, things are about to get hotter. (Cue in sizzle sound effect.) In a few weeks we are leaving for our honeymoon, the big adventure à deux, or "The Great Went" as I keep branding our honeymoon as.

Take a guess at where we're going...

No, really guess...!

We are going to :::drumroll please:::

A common reaction from American friends and family has been total confusion. With Greece, Italy and Spain being just next door, why would we go to California? Because California is freaking awesome, that's why. Also, Aurélien has never been and to a European who grew up watching American television and movies, this, is an exotic destination. He is so excited that he has been whistling Tupac's "California Love" for several weeks now, which has sort of taken the toughness out of the song and made it sound more like a farty ringtone on a Nokia phone.

I really can't wait to show off the town that I once called home and to expose him to the local culture like authentic taco stands, out of work actors, The Coffee Bean (!!!), and building pool parties. But could you me a favor, guys? Cross your fingers for a celeb sighting for Aurel. He can't go to LA without at least seeing one pretty person. It would just be wrong. We're shooting for a goodie like a Gyllenhaal sib, a Coppola spawn or Jason Bateman, but you know, Tori Spelling will do. Just putting it out there...

These are our exciting travel plans for the summer...
Are you heading anywhere?

  1. Woot woot! I LOVE California. And think your choice is faboo. Hello? Worth it for the sushi ALONE!

My folks lived in San Diego for over 20 years and it was heaven to visit!! Might be worth a drive down the coast...?

    1. Isn't California awesome?!? LA gets a bad name but it really is one of the coolest cities (IMHO) in the States. We are actually going to head up north to SF, because Aurel is dying to see it. We'll do SD the next trip, with the family and friends I have out there, it will certainly not be our last West Coast trip!

  2. I'm sure that trip will be great!

I'm currently at home in the US (near Cleveland), introducing J to everything American. We also have a few days in Chicago planned.

Though I'm not going to lie, I love having the air conditioning here. However, we were greeted with 100F+ temperatures (and a heat index of much higher). That makes the heat wave in France seem like nothing.

    1. Shannon, I am SO ready to get back to the States. I'm so jealous of you!! While it is hot here, summers in France don't feel like "real summer", you know? Summer is the smell BBQ, cicadas chirping, outdoor swimming (non of this indoor piscine non-sense), A/C and shit television! : )

CAN'T WAIT TO HEAD OUT!! Can you tell? : )

I just came back for Miami and it was very very hot! When at night. I went outside the and my throat started burning with the dryness of the atmosphere...

Although it would be past summer ....I'll going to the British Virgin Islands in September , excited about that :) :)

    Have fun! :) :) :) :)

    1. Hahahaha how funny is that song? I have since added it to my workout playlist and laugh as I do my living room aerobics.

The rain really came down yesterday and I thought it would cool things off, and while it did, it only lasted an hour or so and the temperatures went back up! Boo.

Yes, I'll take tons of photos. Working on getting a new Sim card for the States so I have Instagram to document the trip. Do you have Insta by the way?

Happy September vacation (such a lovely time to travel)! The Virgin Islands sounds just enchanting!

  4. i have been living in SoCal for quite some time now and have yet to see a celebrity...but I hope you guys do!

oh actually strike that...i went to a place where world class ice skaters practice and got to see the last Olympic gold medalist in men's skating while he was practicing...so I guess that I counts!

You guys can go too if you really want to see a celeb and haven't see one...it is at the Toyota Sports Arena in El Segundo, where the LA Kings also practice.

    1. Really? When I lived there, I saw people quite often. I also worked at a Coffee Shop in the Hollywood Hills and lived in Silver Lake, so that helped!

We'll just hang out at Urth Caffe on Melrose and wait to see like Jessica Alba or some "green" celeb like that! Can't wait to show off this awesome city!

  5. you can also go to the grove. they film access hollywood there where Mario Lopez interviews celebs... He is a celeb too I guess if you are a Saved by the Bell fan.

    1. Love Mario Lopez!!! Oh wait, no, he cheated on Ali Landry! I don't get dudes sometimes...

We are actually staying in that area near Fairfax, so I have faith that Aurel will get his sighting! I bet you when I point someone out, he will say "Who is that?" I mean, he has asked me who Parker Posey was more times than I can remember!

  6. I think you have some sort of magic celebrity dust due to all the stories we've heard, so I'm sure you'll spot someone! Enjoy!

I wish it was cooler in my apartment than outside, dyyyyying. Office too.

I am doing Belgium (Grand Prix!!!), England and Italy (Sorrento) this summer, with my parents. Cannot wait!!

Wow, you are doing some awesome travel! You are one of the few people I know here who really take advantage of being close to so many amazing countries! I need to take a page out of your travel book. For the time being, I'm going to a town that I have lived in.....I know, so not creative. : )

  9. I completely understand your decision to go to CA. I hope that you'll snap some pics of Aurélien in "your" town. It always amazes me how my Swiss husband morphs into someone different when we visit the USA. I have great memories of the first time that I took Stéphane to Disneyland and Universal Studios. He was like a little kid in awe of everything.

Have a wonderfully romantic time on your honeymoon!

That is so cute! Now that I have met Stephane, I can imagine it! Universal studios is great. If we do one super touristy thing, that may be it. It really is a lot of fun. Back to the Future "ride"...epic!

  10. Have a blast, and I hope you have a slew of celeb sightings!

It's pretty melting here too, and I had a 7-legged spider freak me out completely in my bathroom yesterday. I ended up talking to it, telling it just how freaky it was with only 7 legs, and asking it to kindly hop off again, which it did, and we'll just pretend that it can never come out from under that skirting board again. Unless he's eating bugs of course, in which case he can do that, just out of my sight...

    1. Thanks Katy! I hope we have some goodies to share with you all!

See, I'll take a spider over a roach any day! That's what we're fighting with here. The building next door is doing construction and they keep trying to get in through the window (I saw one trying to help himself in the other day), so now we can't open the windows at all. It's insanely hot here.

Hahaha I love how you talk to bugs! So do I, did it yesterday and was wondering if there is a language barrier. Food for thought.

  11. It'll be so great for him to be going with a "local"!:) I haven't been to California, but it's on my list:)

You got Joey Starr a few weeks back, so Aurelien has got to get his own brush with a celebrity!:) Didn't you say he was sweet on Jennifer Love Hewitt at some point?;)

    1. California, especially LA really is best seen by a "local" otherwise you'll end up on Sunset Strip eating at an overpriced steakhouse drinking 14 dollar cocktails. Having been super poor there, I know all of the cheap bars, authentic taco stands (2 dollar fresh tacos!!) and corner cafes....let's hope they are all still there! In this economy, you never know, right?

Hahaha yes, Aurel thinks JLH is super cute (she's pregs now, isn't she?), but other than expressing that a year ago, he doesn't really have his "ultimate crush". Unlike me who would knock her own husband down at a Jason Schwartzman sighting! I'm awful.

  12. I think California is an awesome place to honeymoon (this coming from the girl who mini-mooned in Boston).
And don't talk to me about bug! I've got like a colony of flies in my house and I killed a scorpion before 8am this morning. It's not like there is a good time for killing scorpions, but before 8am is too darn early.

    1. LOL! Mini-mooned! So cute!!!! I love that. I wish I was going on a small trip before just to be able to say that! You're so witty, Madame LPV.

A scorpion?? Are you for real? I'm going to ask a dumb question but um, aren't they like deadly??? How can you sleep at night? Damn. I always knew you were bad ass but this is like next level shit right here. : )

  13. Not sure if my comment went through so I'm typing it again, blergh...
That's awesome! Great for him to see it for the first time and for you to see it through his eyes! I miss California so much. Lived there my whole life until I moved to Korea earlier this year. You should stop in Santa Barbara (my old stomping grounds) and eat the most delicious Mexican food ever at Los Agaves. And then if you like cupcakes and wine stop in Los Olivos at Saarloos where they pair a specialty cupcake with every wine taste (weekends only). It's amazing! Then I can live vicariously through you. Have a great trip! :)

  15. When will you be here in Los Angeles? As a 33 year resident of this City, it will be my pleasure to invite Aurelien and you to lunch, in my little retreat, 15 miles North of Malibu. I do speak French and have immensely enjoyed reading your wonderful vignettes about living, loving, working and learning in Paris!

    Best wishes,

Wow, thank you so much for this comment and for enjoying the blog. It means a lot. : )

We are coming early August for a week before heading up to SF. 15 miles north, is that Calabasas? What a lovely area! Don't kill me for asking but don't the Kardashians live up there? : ) E-mail me about the retreat! Thank you!

  16. A really great place to spot celebrities and also to get a nice yet slightly pricey meal is The Ivy on Robertson in LA. But 95% of the time you'll always see a celebrity there! I hope you enjoy the City of Angels (my hometown!) and be sure to hit the beaches while you're there and enjoy the sun!

I really can't tell if this is the third time this message is being sent (sorry if it is!)

    1. Hi Andrea!

Thanks for your comment and for reading. : )

The Ivy! Yes. I forgot about that place. I used to drive by there all the time to get glimpses of famous people but I never could because the paps were in the way! Urth Caffe and the 101 Coffee shop (where I worked for 4 years!) are also good haunts to check out pretty people, so we'll start there. We just want one sighting for the novelty factor and then after we don't care.

Thanks again for your comment. I am so excited to return! This is a New Yorker who seriously loves LA!
