The Autumn Switch.

It's chilly, rainy and gloomy here in Paris. The days are getting noticeably shorter, leaving the house without a scarf (or an umbrella!) is no longer an option, and I have made the official switch from full-bodied post-summer Chardonnays to Bordeaux (my current pick has been the deliciously oaky and reasonably priced Caves Fleury Bordeaux). It's official; autumn has arrived! And as much as I loved this summer and all its simplicity, I'm an autumn chick who embraces the calmness of the season.

The autumn switch is in full swing chez moi! My gardenia hand cream that I use as a light summer scent has been switched out for my heavier autumn scents; Black Orchid by Tom Ford and Jean Paul Gaultier Classic. My summer signature attire of navy blue striped day dresses and Keds have been replaced with fuzzy sweaters, cable-knit tights and slouchy boots that have been hibernating in the cave at Aurelien's father's house out in Fontainebleau. And finally, empty pop dance music of the summer has been switched out with music that has a little more meaning that having someone call me...maybe.

Here are some of my autumn favorites that will accompany me while I sort through piles of clothes, arrange them in color order (total "ROY G BIV" action) and get ready to take on yet another season in Paris...

Need To Be - Stereolab
Satellite - Guster
Bird and the Bee - Polite Dance Song
3 6 9 - Cat Power
Saint Jerome - Coconut Records
Running Thoughts - Deerhoof
People's Parties - Joni Mitchell
The Look You Gave That Guy - Eels
White Belly - Belly
Iron Man - The Cardigans
Outcome - Beck
Brothers and Sisters - Blur
Diamond Sea - Sonic Youth

    1. Happy Spring to you!! I forget that it's not autumn everywhere! Enjoy the sunshine, flowers and long days that lie ahead of you!
For us here, it's just beginning....I'm not looking forward to the months following the glee and joy of the holidays. Boooooo!

  3. Oh yeah! Music to listen to! Exactly what I needed today, Ella. I'll be getting out the bags o'boots this afternoon--it is finally time!!! My self-confidence levels will be returning from sub-par levels once I am firmly back in boots and sweater land (and thank you for what you wrote--right back at ya!). And ps. I also just moved Black Orchid up to the front of the medecine cabinet--that is some dangerous poison. To be used sparingly...
    Bon Dimanche,

    1. I hope you liked the playlist. I tried to pick fun yet cozy songs to listen to while futzing around the house. I don't know what the weather is like down by you, but for us here in Paris (with the exception of today), the rain season is creeping in...

Black Orchid is such a perfect scent for the cooler seasons! I'm so glad you're a fan! And you're so right...to be used in small doses otherwise it enters old lady/prostitute land. One spritz generally does the trick. : )

  4. I've been putting the autumn switch off for as long as I can but I'm feeling more motivated now that you've provided me with a playlist. Goodbye short sleeves and sandals...hello sweaters and boots.

  6. I've made the switch to my fave season, yes, even though I don't get to enjoy it much what with the full-time job and the full-time master's. You could say I have no life, and you would be right too:)I saw summer through my living room window and from my balcony. But hey, it's all for a good cause:)

I've started cooking automny/wintery dishes and drinking a bit more red wine (we were awfully reasonable alcohol-wise this summer. We drank beer on the odd terrace, but mostly iced herbal tea and sparkling water at home) - I sent the Duke to the liquor store today for a couple of bottles - and the scarves are definitely out again:) Interestingly, when I lived in The Hague, the scarves were always out... even in the summer! We had a few snowflakes on Friday... bet I'm not gonna see the winter either, which is not necessarily a bad thing!;) Next thing I'll know, it'll be December and I'll be on a plane to Paris:)

    1. I hope you'll be able to enjoy some of the coziest season ever. You're a fall person like me and if you can at least take a stroll with a latte to see some of the foliage, you've gotten your 2012 autumn experience. I know, I'm so cheesy during this season.

I'm drinking a big glass of red now. Cheers! xo.

Snowflakes on Friday!?!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. So. not. ready. for snow!!!

    1. How snuggly is a scarf, slouchy boots and a hot coffee?? I love my maxis as well but when the change comes, we have no choice but to embrace it with fabulous fashion. I know YOU get it!

This time next year, you'll be enjoying the fall here in Paris! How excited are you??

I'll download the album. Thank you for the recommendation! I'm so out of the music loop and rely on hip chicks like to aide-moi! ; )

  8. I haven't made the switch YET... maybe this afternoon.. - I leave for Thailand on Thursday... so being the lazy ass that I am... I figured I would just pack all of my summer clothes.. (making room in my closet- for winter clothes..) & then- when I get home.. just throw the suitecase down in the basement.. Yes, I am pathetic.
    Love your pictures! :-)

    1. You're going to Thailand! You have bigger fish to fry like PACKING! How fun! Put off the autumn switch until you get back. Who needs the added stress?

Enjoy your trip and I'll take a peek over at your blog to see what you've been up to!

  9. Argh, now I have 'Call me maybe' running through my head! Still, it's better than we've been hearing piped through at the grocery stores in Moab and Cortez this week (we'll not even go there on SLC)
