Living Deliciously.

A few months ago, Aurélien and I submitted a photo in the Cupcake Vineyards "Living Deliciously" photo contest. Being a fan of the brand, and missing it when I'm in Paris, I insisted that we participate in such a fun contest. Why not? And what better background than Paris to assist us in our quest? Our brainstorming session was guided by the idea of creating something fun, something that represented a part of us both, while still conveying Cupcake's message of making memories by "Living Deliciously".

On a sunny Sunday in May, we put on our best navy blue stripes, managed to find a bakery open to sell us a baguette (that was actually the biggest challenge of this whole thing!), trekked down to the Eiffel Tower en Vespa, and looked like total jerks posing in front one of the world's most famous monuments as if we had just walked out of a Jean-Luc Goddard film. We received looks of horror from some of the locals who were trying to enjoy their day off, heard a man tell his wife that we must be rednecks from Rouen, and had tourists from Asia and the States ferociously snapping photos of "real live French people doing French things". It was quite a scene.

At the apartment, we sorted through a hundred photos before chosing what we thought represented the concept of creating memories while being drunk, and added our photo in with the other contest selections. We didn't think we'd win, but we thought that the other participants and the brand would at least get a kick out of our corny creation.

Famous last thoughts...

Perhaps America isn't ready for la touche française, because not only was it one of the least popular photos of the contest, there were accusations from the other participants that we weren't in Paris (because no Franco-American couple has access to the Eiffel Tower, right?) and only our friends and family voted (by the way, THANK YOU!). Needless to say, we did not win. Burn!

Oh là là là là là là! I think I'm having some terrible luck this week! First the BBC disses me, then Cupcake! Breathe. Breathe. I'm now speaking to myself in my bathroom mirror. Rejection is character building, and it only makes you appreciate the actual experience and takes the focus off of the outcome. This is my inner-failed Hollywood actress speaking, by the way.

Participating in the contest really was all in good fun, and while we're a bit disappointed that there was speculation of us not being in France (I still scratch my head at this, but I guess Paris really is that picturesque!), we will always have this great memory of us goofing around on a gorgeous spring day on the Pont de Bir-Hakeim! Saying that, we're also not sore losers, we ain't hatin' and appreciate a job well done when we see it. So we're sending a genuine congratulations to the winner Peyton for a fabulous photo that inspires us to grab a glass of Cupcake Wine (Angel Food!) to continue on living "deliciously"!

And for those of you who are curious, this is what we submitted:

"Living Deliciously is creating memories in my new home...
...with my new family."

Hey, I told you it was cheesy!

Silver lining:
I don't have to say deliciously ever again if I don't want to.
This word kind of got on my nerves after a few weeks.

Bon week-end à tous!!

    1. Hahah. I guess they were looking for something a little more American! Oh well.

We wanted the Vespa in but there's no parking where we were on this little out cove. Boo.

  2. I know you've made peace with not winning and you're a better person for it, but I don't have to make peace with it. Your photo is adorable! You did exactly what those two girls did but in front of the friggin' Eiffel Tower! How did your photo not win?

I'm sorry Ella but your country is uncultured and bizarre.

    1. I don't know. Like I said to Liz (above), I guess it wasn't what they were looking for. The winning photo is a bit more versatile than ours. We're still really proud of what we submitted!

    2. really anonymous? Really? Did you mean to say Cupcake Wine is uncultured and bizarre?

  3. Whaaat? Now seriously. I think this is some major anti-Frenchy business going on! Your photo is adorable and the winner? Well, come on now. But most of all I just love that you and Seb did that--in the striped shirts and all! Bon weekend...and no more contests this week unless it is of the drinking kind. ;)

    1. Hahaha! Maybe!! Anti-Frenchy business happening in America? Never! Hahaha. This made me laugh.

We were super cornballs in our striped shirts and baguette!
Hey, we'll always have staged photos in front of the Eiffel Tower! Something I've wanted since I came to Paris! We even printed and framed one of the outtakes and are giving it to my grandparents. Voila!

Memories last forever...Yep, I'm still in cornball mode.

  5. Oh my lord, favorite thing I've read all week has to be this... "chosing what we thought represented the concept of creating memories while being drunk"

I'm dying over here. Too funny. And I totally agree with the previous comments, how is the Eiffel Tower NOT a better backdrop then what appears to be a barn wall? Maybe you should have worked in the Vespa. Or a poofy dress. :)

    1. Hahaha! Delicious Memories that's cute and all but let's just call it like it is, drunk memories after a few glasses of wine.

I don't know how the barn was better, but we're also not two cute chicks in Modcloth dresses! I guess they figured my ratty bun wouldn't sell wine! LOL!

  9. Aww! I love the photo! It's so cute! I would have voted for it! Next time you enter a contest, you should share with us, so we can all vote! Can't say I'm surprised others would react to the photo like that, but still... it's adorable!

    1. Perhaps I should have. I guess we didn't want to bother you guys with whoring the photo out on the blog. I cherish my readers and didn't want to abuse that privilege with something gimmicky like a contest.

Instead, I just harassed my friends and family every day on Facebook. I totally got unsubscribed on newsfeeds that week!

Glad you like the photo!! It really was a lot of fun. :)

  10. Aw man, sorry you didn't win! But like, oh my gawd, she did a photo in Paris, thinks she's better than us? USA! USA! ;) You know my opinion of some of the others (the one that did win ain't that bad, considering).

    1. I agree! They probably thought that you thought you were better because you were in Paris, which is ridiculous. I'm sorry that having access to such a beautiful city was disregarded and sort of used against you! What a shame.

We all enjoy the photo, if that counts for anything!

    2. @Gwan - Yeah, no biggie. It happens. My e-mail exchange with you was enough to make the whole experience worth it. You really crack me up, Gwan.

@Jennifer and Gwan - You two are so funny. Maybe they did think we thought we were "hot merde" if they only saw the looks on the locals faces while we were staging this shoot, they'd understand that we were so NOT cool!! We were called rednecks! LOL!

I'm glad you guys are all enjoying the photo. It makes me feel good. Thank you.

I'm loving that you guys are all enjoying the photo. And your strong opinions really are making me laugh. I wasn't expecting such a strong response!! LOL!

Nice to meet you! Glad you liked the photo! :)

  13. When I clicked on the link I was expecting something phenomenal. You are way too kind Ms. Coquine. I'm really disappointed with Cupcake's choice.

I don't know why, but this really bothered me. It looks like you two put a lot of thought into your photo. They should at last send you a case of wine!

I'll be drinking Barefoot from now on. I don't believe in fixed contests.

    1. My mom got a kick out of this comment. She's agrees with your decision to go Barefoot! Not because of the contest, but because she's a fan of this wine. Our house is always stocked with their Chardonnay. For the price, it's really good! One of my favorite cheapy wines! : )

      Cheers!!

  14. I'm not a reader of this blog and am just passing through. I'm just a professional photographer who couldn't hold back from dropping a note to illustrate my disappointment.

The winning photo was just made to look cool from one of those photo-enhancing programs. How was that not taken into account? I guess this is the wave of the future. Hipstagrammed photos.

It's a sad day when an original photo in such a beautiful city is disregarded.

    1. Hi Brian! Welcome...even if you are just passing through.

      : )

Before this photo/contest sitch, I have had some mix feelings about "hipstafying" photos as well. It's all good and fun for personal use but I agree that it perhaps was a little too easy for a photo contest. But I'm sure that's not the reason the photo won. It was the overall ambiance that captured the voters of Cupcake, I'm sure.

Like I mentioned in other comment responses, we enjoyed our afternoon and that's what we'll always remember!

Thank you for your insightful comment. I'm glad that a professional photographer saw some merit in our photo. : )

  18. Who cares about the cupcake people your photo is GREAT, just hilarious. I love it that your bun is at the top of your head, and that you're wearing striped sweaters, baguette at an angle drawing the eye to the action of glass-clanking (AND had some horrible Parisians make snickering remarks about you being from Rouen - that gives you cred all the way!).

Your snap reminds me of a business idea I have in the back of my head called "So French". Remind me when you're back from lollygagging pool side on a palm-treed island!
