Day 297: Work It.

Why do I feel obese, underdressed and old? Award season is finally over, so there's no reason to feel dumpy and unaccomplished. Hmm, so what could it be? When I walk down the streets of Paris, why do I have this undying urge to stop eating, cake on a full face of makeup in an attempt to conceal my age and run into Maje to buy a floral print catsuit, an oversized blazer, and a braided headband to wear over my forehead? Why am I feeling this way? I wonder...

Oh I know, it's worse than's freaking Paris Fashion Week...and I'm working it. No, not diva "werking" it..but working it, like as a hired employee.

But who am I kidding? I live for this. While I do feel old and crusty in a city that's crawling with drop-dead-gorgeous gazelles with flawless skin from Eastern Europe and South America, it still beats the hell out of last year's fashion week. I had just gotten dumped by the man that I was in love with, was couch-surfing with an end-of-winter cold and was washing down Milka bars with red wine in the bathroom of the showroom where I was working, acting like a deprived addict. It was tragic.

Thank heavens that this year is different! While this is hardly my first fashion week presenting a collection to buyers in a showroom, it is my first Fashion Week at such an iconic in Paris. I must admit, I'm a little nervous. Excited, but definitely nervous...I'm doing my nervous but excited shuffle now.

To kick off a week of drama, mayhem, attitude, crazy street style, and editors not dressing their age, here are my favorite songs that either inspire or are inspired by fashion.

Happy Fashion Week!

Lady Gaga - Bad Romance (Chew Fu Remix)
The Knife - Heartbeats
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Date With the Night
RuPaul - Supermodel
David Bowie and Damon Albarn - Fashion
Madonna - Vogue
LMFAO - I'm Sexy and I Know It
George Michael - Freedom 90
Sonic Youth - Kool Thing
George Michael - Too Funky
New Order - True Faith

And because I simply could not resist; the most ridiculous song ever written by Lady Gaga, performed by...

Heidi Montag - Fashion

  1. OMG. Please tell me there is a video to go w/ Heidi Montag's song. I miss watching her and Spencer fight each week. It never got old. Hope PFW is going well and don't feel down! You know you can "werk" it!

    1. No video! How sad, right?! Where are Speidi these days? They were like unavoidable for several years but where are they now??

  2. Hi! The website you gave me,, great. I've found 1 magnificent place there in a good area. Mais c'est très chère! At least for my student budget. BUT I'm thinking of taking it anyway. I have no problem living off of noodles for a good few months, hell maybe a full year. Should I compromise on such a beautiful apartment? I don't think I can. For 675 euros, 22m², centrally located. Do I pass it up? No! I'm just praying and hoping that CAF will help me out. Oddly enough, the places I've checked out on have not been the greatest. Still searching though.

And Fashion Week, I think I need to do the touristy thing and take my camera and snap loads of pics. Is it really like a madhouse behind the scenes? Always been curious.

    1. I'm glad that leboncoin worked out!

645 per month for a somewhat decent sized flat in the central part of town..AND you think it's beautiful? That's doesn't sound too bad! Sounds like a deal to me!

I'm not sure exactly what your monthly income is but if you think you can swing it, I say go for it. There's nothing better than loving where you live.

Good thing food and wine is cheaper here than in the States, eh?

So far work in the showroom is quiet because our clients are running late but it will get crazy soon! I definitely can't take pictures's pretty serious! Maybe on the last day of FW, I'll sneak my camera in for my own memories! : )

  3. wowee..just found your blog and am currently reading from the beginning at my desk..of course when I should be working...loving your journey so far..the good, the bad and the ugly...(yes I'm talking to you crazy french lady on the plane...the nerve!!)
    keep writing..there is a book here....bonne journee

ps...have to say hi to Duchesse..we are blog-friends and I know she's reading...:)

    1. Hi Debbie in Toronto!

Welcome aboard my crazy life! : ) Thank you so much for your sweet comment. I'm glad that I am keeping you entertained at work...just don't get caught!

The pink on the blog definitely gives away to your boss that what you are reading isn't work related! I hope your computer screen is out of his view (and of office snitches!)

Thank you Duchess for refering the blog to your friends! C'est sympa. :)

  4. You forgot: (Never can remember how to link!) And, uh, how cool is it to even work fashion week, right?

    1. Wait, I'm confused! Is this song about fashion?!

I was expecting a link of the John Galliano scandal or Devil Wears Prada footage!

Thanks for the link anyway...I do like this song!

    2. No, it's not about fashion, but about being "one of the beautiful people" and isn't that what most of the models and people attending the shows think they are?

  5. Hi there Ella! ginger checking in to say hello, loving your fashion week post and can't wait to hear more inside scoop. And also I have an update on speidi. They were eating at the same restaurant as we were on Valentines Day, so random! It was actually Freddie who spotted them! I think hs exact worse were 'isnt that the guy from that horrible show you used to make me watch?'. The waitress said they eat there regularly so you heard it here first :)

    1. Ahoy Ginger!

Omg..this skirt is cutting off circulation. If I had a glass of champagne, I think I'd impload! Good times in fashion, right?

How did you not tell me about the Speidi sighting? That's total "Hollywood Scene"! Was Freddie excited?

  6. As if you don't have enough to think about this week, why aren't your posts showing up in my reader anymore?! Since it seemed strange that you haven't posted in awhile, I decided to visit your blog to find out what was going on -- and there are two new posts that I haven't seen. Now that I've got that out of the way...

How exciting to be working FW! I stood outside some of the shows last year to watch the arrivals of all the fashionistas. Seeing so many tall, thin and gorgeous people in one place was an experience. I can't imagine what it must be like behind the scenes!

  7. I know, I can't believe I forgot to tell you! Freddie was excited but didn't want to show it lol. I remember my first round of trade shows at my first job- and having to squeeze into skin tight knitwear ( a la Herve ledger- but cheesier w/ rhinestones) and having to go up two sizes to fit into them! Awesome!
